This past weekend, Bollywood action-drama Animal topped the global box office and became the widest U.S. release for a Hindi-language film. 

on 888 screens, surpassing action bonanza Jawan and Disney superhero outing Brahmāstra: Part One). Its writer-director-editor Sandeep Reddy Vanga has courted controversy for his portrayals of brash, misogynistic protagonists – like in his 2017 Telugu-language drama Arjun Reddy and its Hindi remake, Kabir Singh – and his flippant comments about domestic abuse. Animal is no exception to his unapologetic approach, but it ends up in an awkward position thanks to this real-world context. The first half of its 201 minutes presents a livewire character-thriller in the vein of The Godfather, led by an intense and committed lead performance and sprinkled with enough gory, gonzo action to put Korean ultraviolence to shame. However, just when Animal ought to focus inward, it stagnates in the name of flipping a desperate middle finger at critics of Vanga’s previous work.

The film opens in highly contrasting in 2056, with a matured Ranvijay "Vijay" Singh (a 40-year-old Ranbir Kapoor in some heavenly elderly person cosmetics) commending the centennial of his family combination, Swastik Steel. 

As he thinks back about his late dad, a gathering of party visitors hold tight his every word as he entertains them with vulgar penile humor. The majority of the story happens in our current day, however before it starts off, Vanga draws Vijay's personality in stone. The extremely next scene is a saccharine flashback to his young life, during which he attempts to play hooky (and gets actual discipline from his instructor) to make sure he can go to his dad's birthday celebration. Notwithstanding, when he returns home, his energized yells of "Daddy!" basically reverberation off the walls of a tremendous house; father is excessively occupied with the privately-run company to invest energy with his genuine family.

Animal becomes Ranbir Kapoor’s most successful film.

Animal has now surpassed Sanju to become the most successful film of Ranbir Kapoor’s career. Sanju, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, had a worldwide collection of ₹588.50 crore. Animal is Ranbir Kapoor’s third consecutive success at the Box Office.

Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, reportedly made with ₹200 crore, collected ₹223 crore at the Box Office. Before that, Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva, made with around ₹400 crore, minted ₹431 crore.

Criticism for Animal

Animal, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, is under scrutiny for its portrayal of extreme violence and has been criticised for promoting "toxic masculinity" and "misogyny", similar to the director's previous work Kabir Singh.

The Guardian criticised the film for its problematic dialogue and unfavourably called it “a poor man’s version of The Godfather".
